X-ray vision?  Remember the cool old school advertisements for x-ray vision glasses?  Anyone ever get sucked in to sending in their allowance on these babies?

The Godhead is in the business of giving sight and conversely, blinding.

In Proverbs 2, the author is admonishing his sons to seek the Lord…to follow hard after Him…the dad’s instructions:
  • Receive my words
  • Treasure my commandments within you
  • Make your ear attentive to Wisdom
  • Incline heart to understanding
  • cry for discernment,
  • Lift voice for understanding;
  • Seek her (wisdom) as silver & search for her as hidden treasures…

THEN:

>     You will discern the fear of the Lord
>     You will discover the knowledge of God.

This is a form of “seeing” is it not?  To really see what He can see, know what He knows, hear what He hears, sense what He senses…that would be a wonderful thing.  The author goes on about God & His wisdom…

  • The Lord gives wisdom
    • From His mouth come knowledge & understanding
  • He stores up sound wisdom for the upright (righteous – those of us in Christ!)
  • He IS A SHIELD to those who walk in integrity
  • He guards the paths of justice
  • He preserves the way of His godly ones

When He does that…you will discern righteousness & justice & equity & every good course.

WHY?
The author uses God and then His attributes interchangeably it seems…
  • For (because) wisdom will enter your heart
  • & knowledge will be pleasant to your soul
  • Discretion will guard you
  • Understanding will watch over you

HE GIVES YOU EYES TO SEE WHAT IS REALLY GOING ON!  Why?

  • To deliver you from the way of evil
  • from the man who speaks perverse things;
  • From those who leave the paths of uprightness to walk in the ways of darkness
  • (from those) who delight in doing evil & rejoice in the perversity of evil;
  • (from those) whose paths are crooked, and who are devious in their ways
  • To deliver you from the strange woman
  • From the adulteress who flatters with her words;

…and on & on the author describes the adulteress.

So, He gives us eyes to see.  The ability to discern & detect the legit from the counterfeit.  To give us x-ray vision of sorts….

X-ray vision, per Wikipedia:

“In science fiction stories or super hero comicsX-ray vision is the ability to see through physical objects at the discretion of the holder of this superpower. The most famous possessor of this power is DC comics iconic super hero character Superman.

Though called X-ray vision, this power has little to do with the actual effect of X-rays. Instead, it is usually presented as the ability to selectively see through certain objects as though they are invisible, translucent or not present, in order to see objects or surfaces beyond or deep to the affected object or material.

REAL X-RAYS:  X-rays have many practical uses for scientific and medical imaging. Security agencies are experimenting with applications of imaging devices which can “see” through clothing (using terahertz waves). Such devices are being deployed in some airports as a way of detecting contraband, such as guns, which may be carried beneath a person’s clothing. The devices have created some degree of controversy from personal privacy advocates who worry about screeners being able to see people “naked.”. There also exist certain night-vision equipped video cameras that can be modified to see through clothing at a frequency just below visible light. Such imaging is not true x-ray vision, but rather shows variations in heat radiation rising from the skin beneath the clothing which can provide some detail of the body beneath.”

To go back to Proverbs 2, I guess what hit me yesterday was that GOD gives the things listed in these verses – He and He alone does.  We can’t get real wisdom, discernment, etc in any other way.  He must reveal it to us in order for us to get it, but we also must pursue the Giver in order for Him to reveal it, it seems.  There is a definite “If…Then…” depiction.

“Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness and  all these things will be added to you.” (Matt 6:33)
“So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” (2 Cor 4:18)

 16 “Don’t be afraid,” the prophet answered. “Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”

 17 And Elisha prayed, “Open his eyes, LORD, so that he may see.” Then the LORD opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.

 18 As the enemy came down toward him, Elisha prayed to the LORD, “Strike this army with blindness.” So he struck them with blindness, as Elisha had asked.

 19 Elisha told them, “This is not the road and this is not the city. Follow me, and I will lead you to the man you are looking for.” And he led them to Samaria.

 20 After they entered the city, Elisha said, “LORD, open the eyes of these men so they can see.” Then the LORD opened their eyes and they looked, and there they were, inside Samaria.
(2 Kings 6: 16-20)

Just marveling again that He is the source of all things.  He gives me the ability to see and see clearly what is going on around me…nothing and no one else.  The world is in search of knowledge & wisdom on all sorts of things, but they typically do not turn to the Source of this wisdom, and therefore are blind for the time being.  Jesus does say that if they would but turn to him, He would heal them:

For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.’ (Matt 13:15).
